Governor John M. Patterson: A Named Star in Orion | International Star Registry

John Malcolm Patterson was an American lawyer, politician, and the 44th governor of Alabama from 1959 to 1963. He was born on September 27, 1921, in Goldville, Alabama, and grew up in Phenix City, Alabama. He was the son of Albert Patterson, a prominent attorney who was assassinated in 1954 while running for state attorney general. 

Patterson graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1949 and was admitted to the bar the same year. During his term as governor, Patterson worked to improve the state’s education system and economy. He also supported segregation and opposed the Civil Rights Movement. His opposition to civil rights led to his defeat in the 1962 Democratic primary by George Wallace, who would later become a prominent segregationist governor of Alabama.
