On Wednesday, astronomers captured something that we thought was unobservable. These astronomers were able to capture an image of a black hole, which is a cosmic abyss that is so deep and so dense that not even light can escape it.
Up until now, black holes were left only to the imagination of artists and computer model projections. The New York Times reports that the image captured is of a lopsided ring of light. It is surrounded by a dark circle deep in the heart of galaxy Messier 87. This galaxy is some 55 million light-years away from our planet Earth.
