Doug Burgum: Governor, Entrepreneur, and a Named Star

Doug Burgum is an American businessman and politician who has been serving as the 33rd Governor of North Dakota since 2016. Born on August 1, 1956, in Arthur, North Dakota, Burgum was raised on a farm and went on to graduate from North Dakota State University with a degree in computer science.  Before he entered politics, Burgum was a successful entrepreneur, having co-founded Great Plains Software in 1983, which he sold to Microsoft in 2001 for $1.1 billion. He then became the Senior Vice President of Microsoft and later went on to found Arthur Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in tech startups.  Burgum’s political career began in 2016 when he won the Republican nomination for Governor of North Dakota. He went on to win the general election with 76% of the vote, making him the first candidate to win every county in North Dakota in a gubernatorial election. He was reelected in 2020, winning over 65% of the vote.
